CNC Steps per mm Calculator
Calibrate an axis or calculate theoretical steps per unit from motor, microstep, and drive travel values. Verify the result on the machine before production work.

- Steps/mm

- Travel per step
- 0.01 mm
Formulas
- Adjusted steps per unit = current steps per unit × commanded distance ÷ measured distance.
- Steps per mm = adjusted steps per unit ÷ 25.4 for inch-based calibration, or adjusted steps per unit for metric calibration.
- Travel per step = 1 ÷ steps per mm.
Assumptions
- Calibration assumes the commanded and measured distances use the selected unit system and the axis moves without slip or lost steps during the test.
- Use the result for the selected axis only and verify it with a measured move before production work.
- CNC, 3D printer, belt-drive, and lead-screw controllers may use different configuration names; do not mix their unit conventions.
CNC step distance and calibration
Use Calibration when you can command and measure an axis move. Use Theoretical when you know motor steps, microsteps, and lead-screw or belt travel per revolution.
Calibration: adjusted steps per unit = current steps per unit × commanded distance ÷ measured distance. Theoretical: steps per revolution = motor steps per revolution × microsteps; steps per unit = steps per revolution ÷ travel per revolution.
This calculator does not detect backlash, slip, lost steps, incorrect microstep settings, or controller-specific conventions. CNC, 3D printer, belt-drive, and lead-screw setups must be checked against their own controller documentation.
