Define the measurement boundary
Before calculating CNC machine power consumption, state what the meter includes. A machine input meter may include the spindle drive, controls, coolant, hydraulics, extraction, or other auxiliaries. A sub-meter may cover only one load.
Separate the load lines
- Measured machine input: the kW or kWh recorded at the chosen meter boundary.
- Spindle load: a controller or drive signal that needs the machine record to become power.
- Auxiliary load: coolant, pumps, extraction, controls, or other equipment in or out of the boundary.
- Runtime and idle: record the timing window and separate productive, waiting, and powered-but-idle periods.
- Energy cost: apply the utility bill or tariff to the measured kWh basis.
Measurement workflow
- 1Choose the meter pointDocument what equipment is included and the units reported by the meter.
- 2Record a time windowCapture runtime, idle time, job identity, and machine state for the measurement.
- 3Reconcile with recordsCompare meter values with utility bills, equipment logs, or controller records.
- 4Allocate carefullySend the measured energy basis into the quote or hourly-rate model without double counting auxiliaries.
Boundaries and verification
Power consumption varies with the installed machine, process, auxiliary equipment, duty cycle, and measurement boundary. Do not infer a general range or savings promise. Re-measure when equipment, process, or tariff changes.
Use the CNC formula reference when a process record also needs RPM and feed relationships.
